Objectives:

  • Students should realize that this class involves communicating mathematical reasoning.
  • Students should realize that a major component of this class is talking with other students about mathematics.
  • Students should begin to develop the concept of covariation.

Lesson Guide

Syllabus

[10 minutes] Introduce yourself, and go over the syllabus. Use the projector and show the students the syllabus on canvas as you go over it.

Introducing the Problem

[5 minutes] Tell students that this class will be different in that we expect them to reason about mathematics and talk through their reasoning. Some problems have more than one right answer and some problems have no right answer. In this class, we are not aiming to just get answers, but rather to develop understanding.

Group Work

[15 minutes] Have students work through the worksheet.

Synthesis

[5 minutes] Take 5 minutes to synthesize what has happened. Be careful not to present yourself as the source of information or right/wrong claims in the classroom. Instead focus on student reasoning and communication.
